WCC NEWS: Global prayer for peace on the Korean Peninsula

On 13 August, a global prayer for peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula will unite voices seeking to build bridges between North and South Korea.

Composed by the National Council of Churches in Korea, the prayer is held annually on the Sunday before Liberation Day, observed in both North and South Korea to mark the date in 1945 when Korea won independence from Japanese colonial oppression. The date was also when the peninsula was divided into two countries.

The prayer notes that this year marks the 70th year of the armistice system.

The spring wind that had been blowing on the Korean Peninsula for a while has disappeared and now it is only a land filled with cold air,” read the prayer. The danger of war is growing, and the great power nations are doing as they are wish, regardless of what the people of this land think.”

The prayer reflects on the smallest deeds and the smallest seeds of peace and reunification that remain. Let the people take up their cross upon their shoulders and climb the hill of reconciliation and peace,” reads the prayer. Let the energy of war disappear from this land, and let the future of our nation be determined by the strength and wisdom of our nation.”

The prayer also notes that Japan is dumping contaminated nuclear waste water into the ocean.

God, give us the wisdom to stop these actions that endanger the whole planet,” the prayer reads. For this, let the South and the North, the North and the South speak with one voice and become a united country that contributes to world peace beyond the Korean Peninsula.”

WCC NEWS: Prayer for Sudan will express solidarity with churches and people

An ecumenical prayer on 28 July will express love and solidarity for the churches and people of Sudan.

The prayer will lament the suffering of the people as ceasefire agreements have been broken, and particularly lift up the plight of refugees and internally displaced persons facing grave challenges. Women, children, and people with disabilities are becoming increasingly vulnerable.

Those gathered to pray will focus on the families of those who lost their loved ones and healing for those who are injured. The prayer will also thank God for the work of specialized ministries and ecumenical partners working and living in Sudan.

The prayer—one for sustainable peace and reconciliation in Sudan—is a response to requests from the Sudan Council of Churches and religious leaders in Sudan and across the world.

WCC NEWS: As WCC delegation visits US, focus goes to prayer, reflection, and action

A World Council of Churches (WCC) delegation, led by WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, is visiting the USA this week, traveling to New York City as well as Washington, D.C. to bring together ecumenical leadership.

WCC president from North America Rev. Dr Angelique Walker-Smith expressed appreciation to WCC member churches, the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, the Canadian Council of Churches, and the WCC Ecumenical Office to the United Nations in New York for coordinating the visit.

“We are grateful for this timely visit and the attention it brings to both the international and regional priorities in the North American/Turtle Island context,” said Walker-Smith. “Important conversations with the leadership of the United Nations, the Papal Nuncio, the member churches, congressional leadership, as well as old and new partners are already showing promise of renewed and possible new relationships and opportunities to make more visible our ecumenical commitment to the Pilgrimage of Justice, Reconciliation, and Unity.”

A few weeks ago, during the meeting of the WCC central committee in Geneva, the North American group shared a strong message in the plenary, raising the key concerns of the region.

“The agenda of this visit strategically builds on continued ecumenical conversations of mutual understanding and consensus building, both internationally and regionally, from the WCC 11th Assembly and recent central committee,” said Walker-Smith. "Such is a natural and timely progression for building on this momentum while prayerfully discerning and co-creating strategies concerning our priorities for prayer, reflection, and action.”

More specifically, she added, it opens the door for future visits and the development of strategic action markers that reflect our regional priorities globally with the WCC. Priorities include combatting racism, addressing white supremacy and white Christian nationalism; addressing growing wealth gaps; acting for climate justice; and walking in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and communities.

Additional guiding concerns will be ecumenical formation, and the recent election of commissioners from North America/Turtle Island to the various WCC commissions, and later the Advisory Reference Groups and the new Commission on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.

“A focus on coming alongside and supporting younger generations of leadership and inviting those who may be beginning or renewing their pilgrimage/journey with the ecumenical movement will also be important in this season until the next assembly,” said Walker-Smith.
